Facts & Myths
Is opal lucky?
In ancient times, opal was considered a stone of good fortune and the Romans used to carry it around as a good luck talisman. However in the 19th and 20th centuries, many damaging reports and unfounded superstitions labelled opal as unlucky; and this happened mostly due to commercial reasons so that other gemstones could move into the market. In modern times, such beliefs are disregarded, and in a number of cultures today opal is still carried as a good luck charm.
Is opal rare?
Yes it is! It is extremely rare, beautiful and the only gemstone of its kind. Unlike some misguided beliefs, it is not an inferior stone of poor quality. The gemstone is quite remarkable, as every opal is unique with limitless play of colour. In fact, Pliny the Elder wrote “Those who have written books of precious stone have given unto them the name and glorie of the greatest price.” He believes opal to combine the burning fire of ruby, glorious purple of amethyst and green sea of the emerald in a glittering and incredible manner.
